Provigil
is a smart drug that promotes
wakefulness in individuals with excessive sleepiness. It has been
approved by FDA to reduce excessive sleepiness in people suffering from narcolepsy,
obstructive sleep apnea, or shift work sleep disorder. It helps in keeping the
mind active, alert and well-functioning all throughout the day. It is a
cognitive enhancer that improves memory retention, improves creativity in an
individual. It provides a sort of positivity in those who are suffering from
anxiety and depression. It is also said to have a mood-brightening effect on
individuals.

HOW TO CONSUME?
Consult a doctor before taking this drug. He can prescribe
you the right dosage according to your medical condition and your response to
the treatment. Following are some general guidelines for consumption of
Provigil:
- · Take it orally with or without food.
- · Narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea patients can take this medication once in the morning.
- · Those working in shifts can take this pill an hour before the start of the work shift (night shifts). Rotational shift workers must consult a doctor about the time and dosage of Provigil.
- · If you suddenly stop taking this pill after a long-term use, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. You must consult a doctor immediately on the occurrence of these symptoms.
- · Do not take it with alcohol or any other such substances as this can have dangerous side effects on your health.
WHO SHOULD NOT CONSUME?
- · If you are allergic to Modafinil or Armodafinil (Nuvigil) or have any other allergies, you should not consume Provigil. Talk to the doctor about it.
- · If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, talk to a doctor before consuming this drug. There could be potential risk to the fetus regarding which you must clearly discuss with the doctor.
- · It is not known whether it passes into the breast milk or if it harms a nursing infant. Talk to a doctor about the risks associated with it if you are a breastfeeding mother.
- · Children under the age of 17 years should not receive this drug.
IMPORTANT POINTS
- · Modafinil can be addictive. Do not let it get in the hands of someone who was a drug addict before. Keep it away from children and pets. Keep track of the pills in each of the bottle that you own. Its misuse can cause addiction, abuse or even death.
- · Store it at room temperature away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight. Do not keep it in the washroom.
- · Driving or such activities where you need to be mentally alert should be avoided as this drug can make you dizzy. You could be more prone to accidents initially while you are on this drug.
SIDE EFFECTS
Some of the common side effects of this drug include a
headache, nausea, nervousness, dizziness, insomnia etc.
A very serious but rare allergic reaction to this drug like
hives; itching/swelling of tongue, lips, throat or face; severe dizziness;
trouble breathing may occur. Consult a doctor right away.
You may also experience fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat;
mental/mood changes like depression, agitation, or have suicidal tendencies
(rare case). If you experience these serious side effects, get immediate
medical help.
