ABOUT TRAMADOL
Tramadol
is a narcotic
pain-reliever that treats moderate to moderately severe pain. It was
approved by FDA in March 1995. The exact working mechanism of Tramadol is not
known but it is quite similar to that of morphine. Like morphine, it binds to
the receptors of the brain (opioid or narcotic) that are responsible for
transmitting pain sensations from all throughout the body to the brain.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• You should never
misuse this drug as it can lead to addiction, abuse or death. Such a drug should
only be used on the prescription of a doctor and according to his guidelines.
Never give it away to any other person especially a drug addict. Keep it away
from children and animals.
• Store it at room
temperature away from moisture, heat and direct light. Do not keep it in the
washroom.
• Tramadol, when
used with alcohol, can be life-threatening. Therefore, never consume it with
alcohol or any other such substances.
• This medication
may impair your thinking ability and reactions. Avoid driving and other such
activities that require mental alertness at least until you know how this
medication is affecting you.
• If you suddenly
stop using this medication after having used it for a long time, you may
experience withdrawal symptoms. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice
any of such symptoms.
WHO SHOULD NOT CONSUME IT?
• If you are
pregnant or planning to get pregnant, consult with a doctor before taking
Tramadol. There might be potential risks to your unborn baby.
• If you are
breastfeeding, talk with a doctor before taking Tramadol. Discuss the risks and
benefits associated with consumption of Tramadol while breastfeeding.
• Tramadol is not
approved for children under the age of 17 years.
DOSING INFORMATION
• The recommended
dose of this painkiller
is 50-100 mg (immediate release tablets) every 4-6 hours as required for pain.
• The maximum dose
is 400 mg/day.
• To improve
tolerance, Tramadol can initially be given at 25 mg/day; the doses can be
increased by 25-50 mg every 3 days to reach 50-100 mg every 4-6 hours.
• It may be taken
with or without food.
SIDE EFFECTS
Common side effects of Tramadol include nausea, headache,
dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach
pain, itching, sweating, flushing etc.
Seek immediate medical help if you have seizures
(convulsions), missed menstrual periods, noisy breathing, shallow breathing,
fainting, agitations, hallucinations, fever, and sweating, shivering, fast
heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, diarrhea,
vomiting, nausea etc.
