Nuvigil
is a smart drug that promotes wakefulness in individuals suffering from
excessive daytime sleepiness. It is a cognitive
enhancer that helps in improving cognitive functions in an individual.
It helps to improve memory retention, enhances creativity, reasoning skills and
abilities in individuals. It helps in reducing excessive sleepiness in
individuals caused by narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep
disorder. It was approved for use by FDA on 15th June 2007.

Inactive ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, lactose
monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and
pregelatinized starch
HOW TO CONSUME?
Before taking this drug or any other medication, always
remember to consult a doctor. Following a doctor’s instructions will save you
from many ill effects of a medicine. Do not take it in larger or smaller
amounts or for a longer duration than prescribed. Given below are general guidelines
for consumption of Nuvigil:
• You can take this
pill orally with or without food.
• The half-life of
Armodafinil is approximately 13 hours, normally given for up to 12 weeks.
• The usual adult
dose for those suffering from narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea is 150-250
mg to be taken once in the morning.
• The usual adult
dose for those working in shifts (night shifts) is 150 mg to be taken once a
day about 1 hour before the start of the shift. The people who work in
rotational shifts should consult with a doctor about the dosage and the time of
taking this pill.
IMPORTANT POINTS
• Armodafinil can
be quite addictive. Never share it with any other person especially someone who
has a history of drug addiction. Keep it away from children and animals. Its
misuse can lead to addiction, abuse or even death. Keep track of the pills in
each of the bottles that you own.
• This medication
can make you feel dizzy or light-headed. Avoid driving or any activities that
require you to be mentally alert at least until you are able to perform it
safely. Consult a doctor as soon as you experience these side effects.
• You may
experience withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop taking this drug after a
long-term consumption. Talk to a doctor if you notice any withdrawal symptoms
like a headache, nausea, dizziness etc. Your doctor may prescribe you to slowly
decrease the dose until the side effects occur no longer.
• Tell your doctor
all about the other drugs that you are taking like prescribed drugs,
non-prescribed drugs, vitamins, or herbal products etc.
WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS DRUG?
• This medication
is not approved for use by children under the age of 17 years.
• It is not known
whether Armodafinil can harm an unborn baby. Talk to a doctor before consuming
this pill if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
• It is not known
whether Armodafinil passes into the breast milk or if it could harm a nursing
infant. If you are a breastfeeding mother, talk to a doctor before taking this
medication.
• If you are
allergic to Armodafinil or Modafinil or have any other allergies, then you must
not take this drug. Talk to the doctor about it.
SIDE EFFECTS
Common side effects of this drug include insomnia, headache,
dizziness, drowsiness etc.
If you start experiencing a rare but serious allergic
reaction to this drug like rashes, hives, itching or swelling of face or
throat, difficulty in breathing, severe dizziness; you must immediately consult
a doctor.
There are some more serious but rare side effects of this
drug, on the occurrence of which, you must immediately consult a doctor. They
are skin sores or blistering; bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle
weakness; mouth sores, trouble swallowing etc.
